"We depend on nature not only for our physical survival. We also need nature to show us the way home, the way out of the prison of our own minds. We got lost in doing, thinking, remembering, anticipating - lost in a maze of complexity and a world of problems.
We have forgotten what rocks, plants, and animals still know. We have forgotten how to be - to be still, to be ourselves, to be where life is: Here and Now."
-Stillness Speaks, Eckhart Tolle
It is no surprise the trend towards incorporating raw, natural elements continues in home decor. This post highlights the continued use of wood within our homes in a dramatic way. Thick slabs with unfinished edges and deeply pronounced graining, presented with minimal finishing. Mother Nature is really the designer here, and whether offered in a minimal, more contemporary silhouette or traditional profile, the center of attention is really the material itself.
The interesting thing to note is that as humans we have such an instinctive draw to such pure elements, particularly in an era of such technological advancement and social connectivity. Personally, I think we are becoming more and more aware of the fact that much of what we’re interacting with everyday has been thoroughly designed and touched by human hands.
This is not entirely a bad thing; we have crafted great new materials and processes to serve our needs in a multitude of ways. At the same time, it should also be said that in our modern world we can too often neglect our natural desire of connectedness to earth and our own origins.
“Whenever you bring your attention to anything natural, anything that has come into existence without human intervention, you step out of the prison of conceptualized thinking and, to some extent, participate in the state of connectedness with Being in which everything natural still exists.”
-Stillness Speaks, Eckhart Tolle
