When growing up, my Mom was (for a time) a moonlighting antique dealer. One of the things that I have come to appreciate learning from that time is the education you acquire along your treasure hunting journeys. What era a particular item was from, who designed it , and even what items might have significant value. Uncovering items with a history is still exciting to me.
All these designs by Hans Wegner were found on online auction sites. I call them out not for their bargain prices (most of the sellers of these pieces know their market value), but really for the significant era in design they represent. (You can find much more information on the history or Hans Wegner himself at scandinaviandesign.com/hans_wegner)
The character in the these designs is really timeless. The craftsmanship and materials in the “Round Chair” boggle my mind. (Often referred to as “The Chair”, as it was hailed as “The world’s most beautiful chair” according to the American magazine Interiors)
When I look closely at these designs of Wegner, the quality and construction remind me of Thos. Moser (thosmoser.com). Designers and builders in Maine known for their finely crafted, old world furniture and their meticulous attention to detail.
You can find countless pieces similar to these in every price range starting at your local thrift shop all the way up to gallery auctions.
